Students in Honors English are writing sonnets and will be sharing them with us. Today, we will read one by Melissa Méndez:

The Youngest

The «perfect» child, the only who «has it all»
She’s told she’s too young, yet doubts cloud her mind,
She grows, but feels lost, like a quiet call,
While siblings have their lives so well aligned.
Parents’ favorite, or so it may seem,
Yet she’s the last to prove her worth and place,
They tease and laugh but none can truly see
What rests inside her soul, a quiet peace
How does she feel as adulthood comes fast.
Her success, unseen, still out of her reach,
She wonders if these struggles will always last,
Yet somehow, she finds strength in what they teach.
Through her sibling’s failures she grows and learns
Yet, grateful, and through them, her strength returns.
