Students in Honors English are writing sonnets and will be sharing them with us. Today, we will read one by Juan Andrés Rodríguez:

Burden of the Crown

In this kingdom, where I sit to reign,
The board before me holds both dark and light,
Each move I make can twist the day to night,
A dance of fate with every step I gain.
The pawns advance, so small and full of pain,
Their sacrifice for something far in sight,
Though kings, like me, must choose with all their might
To walk so slow, or rush and feel the strain.

But now I see–each piece brings weight to bear,
The queen may soar, but risks a single fall,
The knight must leap, with angles fierce and rare,
While rooks stand strong, advancing through it all,
Each choice I make reveals a truth laid bare,
As my bishop shields the throne, from fateful call.
